ADVICE FROM OUR TEAM

How Much Does A Hot Tub Weigh?

How Much Does A Hot Tub Weigh?

A hot tub can weigh several hundred kilograms when empty and well over a tonne when full of water. Larger spas and swim spas can weigh considerably more.

The exact weight depends on the make, model, size, shell, frame, pumps and other internal equipment. Manufacturer specifications are, therefore, more useful than relying on a general estimate.

Weight is especially important when arranging hot tub transport, removal, or relocation. It affects the team, equipment, access route and lifting method needed to complete the job safely.

At South East Hot Tubs, we consider the weight alongside the dimensions and property access. A relatively compact spa can still be difficult to move if it sits behind a wall, inside decking or at the end of a narrow garden.

What Is The Difference Between Dry And Filled Weight?

The dry weight is the weight of the hot tub before water and users are added. This is normally the most relevant figure when planning transport or removal because the tub should be drained before it is moved.

The filled weight usually includes the hot tub and water. Some manufacturers also include an assumed weight for each seat occupant, while others list only the spa and water weight.

This means filled-weight figures from two manufacturers may not be directly comparable. Always check how the manufacturer defines the figure.

The moving weight is the weight of the drained hot tub plus anything that remains attached or inside it. Small amounts of residual water can stay in the plumbing, and accessories or covers may need to be transported separately.

How Heavy Is An Empty Hot Tub?

Official manufacturer specifications show how widely the weights of empty hot tubs can vary.

For example, the official Jacuzzi J-215 specification lists a dry weight of 235kg for this compact three-seat model. The larger seven-seat Jacuzzi J-245 is listed at 325kg dry.

These examples should not be treated as fixed weight categories. Two hot tubs with the same number of seats may weigh differently due to their dimensions, shells, frames, pumps, and internal equipment.

The most reliable way to confirm the dry weight is to find the exact model specification.

How Much Does A Hot Tub Weigh When Full?

Water accounts for a large part of a filled hot tub’s total weight. One litre of water weighs approximately one kilogram, so a spa holding 1,000 litres contains roughly one tonne of water before users are added.

The Jacuzzi J-215 has a listed water capacity of 776 litres, a dry weight of 235kg and a filled weight of 1,021kg. The larger J-245 holds 1,211 litres and is listed at 1,536kg when filled.

Some manufacturers calculate filled weight differently. For example, the official Hot Spring Flash specification lists a filled weight that includes the water and assumes an adult weighing 80kg in every seat.

This is why you should check what is included in a manufacturer’s figure rather than comparing filled weights without context.

How Much Does A Swim Spa Weigh?

Swim spas are normally much larger and heavier than standard hot tubs.

The official Jacuzzi J-19DT swim spa specification lists a dry weight of 1,208kg, a capacity of 7,068 litres and a filled weight of 8,273kg.

This does not mean every swim spa weighs the same. Length, construction, water capacity and internal systems vary considerably between models.

A swim spa move usually requires more planning due to its dimensions and weight. The route may need suitable vehicle access, specialist lifting equipment and enough space to control the spa at both properties.

Please send us the exact make, model and dimensions if you need help moving a swim spa.

Why Must A Hot Tub Be Drained Before Moving?

Moving a filled hot tub is neither practical nor safe. The water can add more than a tonne to the total weight and will move within the shell as the tub is lifted or tilted.

The hot tub should be switched off, fully drained and safely disconnected before removal. Covers, steps, headrests and loose accessories should normally be removed and transported separately.

Our guide to disconnecting a hot tub for removal explains the preparation in more detail. Hard-wired electrical connections should be dealt with safely by a qualified electrician.

How Can I Find The Weight Of My Hot Tub?

The easiest method is to find the model name or serial number and check the manufacturer’s specification sheet or owner’s manual.

The information may appear under:

  • Dry weight
  • Empty weight
  • Net weight
  • Filled weight
  • Operating weight
  • Water capacity
  • Shipping weight

Check which figure you are reading. Shipping weight may include packaging, while operating or filled weight may include water and assumed occupants.

If you cannot identify the model, send us photographs of the entire hot tub, including the cabinet, control panel, and any manufacturer labels. Dimensions and seating layout can also help narrow down the likely model.

We may not be able to confirm an exact weight without the specification, but we can use the available information to assess the moving requirements.

Why Does Hot Tub Weight Affect The Moving Method?

Weight affects how the hot tub can be raised, supported, controlled and transported.

A lighter spa with wide, level access may suit standard specialist moving equipment. A heavier hot tub may need additional handling equipment, a different team or a more controlled ground-level method.

Access remains just as important as the weight. A 250kg hot tub can still require specialist planning if it sits behind a high wall or inside a sunken deck. A heavier tub may be relatively straightforward when it has clear vehicle access and a suitable route.

We therefore assess:

  • The estimated dry weight
  • Length, width and height
  • Available lifting points
  • Surface and changes in level
  • Gate and pathway dimensions
  • Tight corners and overhead restrictions
  • Distance to the transport vehicle
  • Access at the destination

Our guide to hot tub access requirements explains how to measure and photograph the route before requesting a quote.

Can Several People Move A Hot Tub By Hand?

There is no universal number of people required because hot tubs differ in weight, size, balance and available access.

A heavy object can become harder to control when it is bulky, difficult to grip or carried through a confined space. Adding more people does not automatically make the move suitable if there is not enough room for everyone to work safely.

The Health and Safety Executive’s manual handling guidance explains that the law does not set one specific weight limit. Hazardous manual handling should be avoided where reasonably practicable, risks should be assessed, and the chance of injury should be reduced.

Professional moving equipment helps support and control the spa rather than relying on people to carry its full weight.

Can A Hot Tub Be Transported On Its Side?

Some hot tubs can be moved on their side for part of the process, but this depends on the model, construction and route.

The team needs to support the shell and cabinet correctly so the hot tub does not twist or rest on unsuitable parts. Pipework, pumps and other components also need protection during movement and transport.

We assess the spa before deciding where to position it. The fact that a tub is lighter when drained does not mean it can be tilted or dragged without proper support.

Does The Cover Count Towards The Hot Tub Weight?

Manufacturer dry-weight specifications normally refer to the hot tub itself, but the exact definition can vary.

Covers, steps, handrails and accessories should usually be removed before the move. This reduces loose weight and helps protect the accessories from damage.

A waterlogged cover can be particularly heavy and difficult to handle. Tell us if the cover is damaged or holding water so we can account for it when planning the job.

What If I Do Not Know The Make Or Model?

Not knowing the model does not automatically prevent us from assessing the move.

Send us:

  • Clear photographs from all sides
  • Overall length, width and height
  • The number of seats
  • A photo of the control panel
  • Any labels inside the cabinet
  • Photos and videos of the access route
  • The collection and delivery postcodes

We can review the likely size and moving requirements. For complex access or specialist lifting, we may need further measurements or a site assessment before confirming the method.

Hot Tub Weight And Difficult Access

A hot tub’s weight becomes particularly important when there is no straightforward ground-level route.

A tracked carrier may be used for heavier tubs when the route and ground conditions are suitable. A spider crane or HIAB may be considered where the hot tub needs to pass over a wall or other obstacle.

Every item of lifting equipment has limits that depend on the load, reach, height and setup. Our article on using a spider crane to lift a hot tub explains why weight and lifting conditions must be checked before a crane-assisted move is confirmed.

The safest option is not always the biggest machine. It is the equipment and method suited to the hot tub, access and planned movement.

Is It Worth Moving A Very Heavy Hot Tub?

That depends on the condition and value of the hot tub, the distance involved and the access at both properties.

A working hot tub in good condition may be worth relocating, particularly if the model suits the new property. An older tub with several faults may not justify the cost and planning required for transport.

If the spa is no longer wanted or is no longer economical to move, our hot tub removal and disposal service may be the more practical option.

We can review the tub and access details before advising on the likely requirements.

Hot Tub Weight FAQs

How Much Does A Six-Person Hot Tub Weigh?

The weight varies by model. Many medium and larger hot tubs weigh several hundred kilograms when empty and well over a tonne when filled. Check the exact manufacturer specification rather than relying on the number of seats alone.

Can You Move A Hot Tub While It Still Contains Water?

No. A hot tub should be drained before it is moved. Water adds substantial weight and can shift inside the tub during handling.

Is A Swim Spa Heavier Than A Hot Tub?

Usually, yes. Swim spas are generally larger, hold more water and may weigh over a ton before filling. The exact dry and filled weights depend on the model.

How Do I Find My Hot Tub’s Dry Weight?

Check the manufacturer’s specification sheet or owner’s manual using the model name or serial number. You may find it listed as dry, empty or net weight.

Does Hot Tub Weight Decide If A Crane Is Needed?

Not by itself. The weight, lifting distance, required height, setup area and access restrictions all affect the moving method. Many tubs can be moved without a crane when suitable ground-level access is available.

Can You Quote If I Do Not Know The Weight?

Yes. Send us photographs, dimensions, model information if available and a video of the access. We can review the job and let you know if any further details or a site assessment are needed.
